Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is a free-roam survival horror game and is the second game in the franchise to be developed by Steel Wool Studios and published by Scott Cawthon, with the first game being Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted and is the ninth mainline installment in the Five Nights at Freddy's series. It was first announced on August 8, 2019 (the fifth anniversary of the series) with the release of the first teaser. It was released on December 16, 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC, and it's the second game in the series to be officially rated by the ESRB, being T, with the first being Help Wanted. Currently, it's the biggest game in the entire franchise. The game is a sequel to Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.

Originally the game was intended to release on December 25, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as Scott and Steel Wool wanting to make the game concept bigger than originally planned, the game was delayed to early 2021, however, it was then further delayed to December 16, 2021 in order for the game to be worked on more.

The physical release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 was released on April 1, 2022, along with the game releasing on Epic Games Store.

While the series of update patches (to introduce a quantity of bug fixes, adjustments and optimizations, cut content resurrections, etc.) are currently under development to help improve the majority of the game,[1][2] some DLCs were officially considered as confirmed by Steel Wool from Dawko's interview.[3] On May 30, 2022, a free DLC titled RUIN was announced, set to release in 2023.

On November 22nd, the game was officially released to Xbox.

On March 23rd, 2023, it was announced it would be ported to the Nintendo Switch.[4] It was officially announced during a Nintendo Indie World presentation on April 19th, 2023 and came out later that day.[5]

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach was ported to Nintendo Switch with the help of Pingle Studio. Then, the studio optimized the PS4 and Xbox One game versions.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is the latest installment of the family-friendly horror games loved by millions of players from all over the globe. Play as Gregory, a young boy trapped overnight in Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex. With the help of Freddy Fazbear, Gregory must survive the near-unstoppable hunt of reimagined Five Nights at Freddy's characters - as well as new, horrific threats.

THE HUNTERS AND THE HUNTED - Once nighttime protocols are initiated, the animatronics at Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex will relentlessly pursue all intruders. Glamrock Chica, Roxanne Wolf, Montgomery Gator, and the Pizzaplex's security guard, Vanessa, will turn over every Cotton Candy Pizza Stand if they have to - it's not wise to stay in one place for too long.

ADAPT TO SURVIVE - Access the building's security cameras to survey the environment and plan your route through danger. Distract enemies by knocking over paint cans and toys - just slip away before enemies are drawn to your location. Hop into hiding spots and allow danger to pass, or try to outrun your pursuers. Play your way, but be prepared to adapt.

EXPLORE AND DISCOVER - Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex offers a variety of attractions for guests to enjoy - Monty Golf, Roxy Raceway, Bonnie Bowl, the sewers, and... Sewers? The Pizzaplex is vast and has no shortage of goodies to discover.

In an opening cutscene, Glamrock Freddy, Montgomery Gator, Roxanne Wolf, and Glamrock Chica get ready for a musical performance. However, right when they are about to start, Freddy malfunctions and collapses.

Freddy then wakes up in "Safe Mode", to the sound of Gregory, who had been hiding within him. Gregory tries to escape through the front doors before they close at midnight, but he arrives late by a few seconds. With Freddy's help, Gregory enters the Superstar Daycare, where he obtains his first security pass. After being kicked out by the Daycare Attendant for shutting the lights off, Gregory hides in Freddy and they run to a recharge station to avoid being caught by Vanny at 1 AM. Surprisingly, Freddy cannot see Vanny with his current set of eyes and mentions that there used to be a rabbit there, but not any more.

Eventually, Vanessa catches Gregory and locks him up in the lost and found, but he finds a screwdriver and escapes through the vent when Vanny appears. Gregory finds Freddy, who has been damaged, and takes him to Parts and Services to be fixed. Unfortunately, the Daycare Attendant (as the Moon) captures the body. Gregory makes his way to Parts and Services alone, avoiding endoskeletons along the way. There, he finds Vanessa talking to Freddy about Gregory and threatening to replace him by putting his casing on a new Endo if he is indeed helping Gregory. She does not repair Freddy and instead continues her search for Gregory. Gregory repairs Freddy himself.

Depending on the player's choices, the duo then proceed to defeat a number of animatronics, including DJ Music Man and two of Freddy's three band-mates before the night ends at 6 AM. Gregory uses the parts obtained from Freddy's bandmates to upgrade Freddy in the Parts and Services workshop. Gregory can stay after 6 AM to defeat the remaining band member and/or get other endings, but only one save point, located in the second floor of the Atrium by the elevators, will work.

Main Gameplay[]

Unlike most games in the series, Security Breach is a true free-roam game, meaning that the player is not restricted to one area and can move throughout the Pizzaplex with little to no obstacles, as opposed to Sister Location where there are only a few rooms that the player can move to.

With the following reveal of Freddy in Space 2's production, the teaser from Scott's main website,, shows off another upcoming game. It shows that the game will be set inside a mall-like building with an 80's-style motif. Freddy Fazbear's Pizza being a restaurant inside the mall. Also included is a laser tag arena, an arcade, and what looks to be a cinema. In the main square of the mall, an animatronic band consisting of new "glamrock" animatronics (Glamrock Chica, Glamrock Freddy, Montgomery Gator, and Roxanne Wolf) play for an excited crowd waving glowsticks. It is entirely possible some of these animatronics are new characters, however.

When looking into source code from the website, a hidden conversation between two characters can be found. It reads as such:

Stay the course.
I will.
Focus on my voice.
I will.
Don't let anyone lead you astray.
I won't.
Have you selected one?
I have.

On September 29, 2019, was updated with a new teaser featuring the new version of what seems to be Freddy Fazbear. While the file is named 7_1.jpg, if the teaser is opened in Notepad, the text "G l a m r o c k _ F r e d _ P o s t e r" can be found. This may imply the new set of animatronics will be known as the glamrock animatronics, with glam rock being a term referring to rock musicians in the 1970s that "wore outrageous costumes, makeup, and hairstyles, particularly platform shoes and glitter." The name found in Notepad also leaves the possibility open that the animatronic featured may be a version of Fredbear instead of Freddy.

On November 5, 2019, the teaser for "Glamrock Fred" was updated. From the image's left side close to "Glamrock Fred's" head, a silhouetted human/rabbit-like figure is silhouetted against the sky. Looking into Notepad, another string of characters can be found reading "S h a d o w o f V a n n y." Given the recent discovery of the Reluctant Follower in Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted, her relation to the rabbit mask, and the generally feminine figure of the shadow, some believe this to be the Reluctant Follower and that her name is Vanny. This was later proven to be true.

On March 24, 2020, a new teaser is uploaded on The teaser poster reveals a brand-new animatronic with a design based on an alligator. The file name is referred as "Montgomery.jpg", and when converting the image to metadata, his name is revealed as Glamrock Monty.

On April 21, 2020, the characters' names are leaked from Funko's list of upcoming products, including in a respective order: Glamrock Chica, Glamrock Freddy (as Glamrock Fred), Montgomery Gator (as Glamrock Monty), Roxanne Wolf, and Vanny (as Vannie).

On April 24, 2020, the game's upcoming 2020-2021 calendar is found at Amazon. The cover (although it was subject to change later on) reveals the renders of Montgomery Gator, Glamrock Freddy, and Roxanne Wolf.

On May 5, 2020, is updated with a new teaser, showing off a neon sign with Glamrock Freddy's shape and the revealed title - Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach. Behind the franchise's trademark logo from the top are faint glows that somewhat appears to be police LED light bars as indicated by the red, white, and blue tints.

On June 11, 2020, is updated once again. The new teaser reveals a female security guard, who will serve as a supporting character. On the same day, Scott confirmed that the game is set to come out around the end of the year.[6]

On August 7, 2020, another new teaser is uploaded to, featuring the full body of the new character and antagonist - Vanny.

On September 16, 2020, the teaser trailer was launched during the PlayStation 5 Showcase event. The video shows a couple of new rooms and inside the mall restaurant, as well as instituting a new animatronic with a grinning crescent moon for a face (later revealed to be the Daycare Attendant). At the end, the game was announced to be a PlayStation console exclusive for the first three months after its release on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. While a release date has not been confirmed yet, this would likely mean the game will not come out any earlier than November 12, 2020, the same date as the release of the PlayStation 5.

On November 17, 2020, Scott Cawthon made an announcement stating that, due to the size of the game being much bigger than expected coupled with the complications of having to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the game was being delayed from a pre-Christmas release until early 2021.[7]

Steel Wool Studios announced on January 11, 2021 that the second trailer will be released tomorrow during the GeForce RTX: Game On Broadcast. The next day, the video was uploaded, featuring some new locations and new robots (S.T.A.F.F. Bots to be exact). Few hours later, Scott made a Reddit post to announce that the new video is more of a tech-demo than a real trailer, while confirming that the real second trailer is due in March.[8]

On February 25, 2021, the second trailer for the game is publicly shown during the PlayStation State of Play livestream. The video reveals that, besides revealing some core gameplay elements and newer locations, the game allows the player to walk around freely, unlike any previous installments. The video reveals the cast of main characters, including Vanny, Vanessa, all four glamrock animatronics, the moon animatronic, as well as the physical reveal of the unnamed sun animatronic. At the end of the trailer shows a reaching arm of a new ominous animatronic.

On March 13, 2021, Dawko in his charity stream slowly reveals a total of nineteen new Security Breach screenshots. First, he uploads fourteen main screenshots to display numerous views of environments and some new locations. Dawko later went on to reveal five extra screenshots: Four screenshots display the glamrock animatronics' home stages, while the fifth and last screenshot reveal what seems to be an underground sewer location with a severely damaged Glamrock Chica and other destroyed objects.

On April 28, 2021, Scott announced that Security Breach was delayed to late 2021, and to satisfy the fans while waiting for the game, Scott released a beat-'em-up fighter spin-off game Security Breach: Fury's Rage on Game Jolt for free.

On September 1, 2021, Steel Wool Studios launched a website for Security Breach. The website takes place in the office room with a huge static-screened monitor, which was used for displaying a series of shorts as teaser videos. When hovering the mouse cursor around, random corrupted texts will pop up, displaying "Having fun?", "Stay hidden", and "Just a glitch", as well as displaying "You cannot save this" when attempting to save the static monitor gif image by right-clicking it. Clicking on Steel Wool Studios' logo from the left monitor redirects to their YouTube channel. Also, clicking on the security badge case will emit a honk noise, one of the franchise's recurring Easter Eggs. If attempting to access the green-lighted button after modifying the source codes, the text will display with "Someone's watching".

On September 7, 2021, from the same TV website, the first Freddy & Friends: On Tour! episode was uploaded, and the video will play in the main monitor screen when clicking on the green-light button. An interesting discovery shows a hidden glitched image that appears for only a brief minimal second at timestamp 0:23, revealing what is later confirmed to be the corrupted versions of the S.T.A.F.F. Bots - Nightmarionne S.T.A.F.F. Bots. The bottom right corner of the paused scene has the text "AlphaZ 6Groups", and what it really means is unknown. Also, at the end of the video, a wire-like tentacle sways over the static screen for few seconds before it cuts to the game's logo, revealing the 6 digit number. The numbers glitch randomly but the fifth number stay as 2, resulting in: "????2?", revealing to be the countdown for the incoming release date reveal.

On September 18, 2021, the website was updated. The security badge case no longer has a honk noise, but Glamrock Freddy's plushie can emit a new honk sound when booping the nose. Hovering over a pizza box displays the text "pizza DELIVERY". The screensaver monitor from the right can now be interacted, as double-clicking the screen causes the Pizza Plex logo icon to change into a rendition of Security Breach's logo with Montgomery Gator replacing Glamrock Freddy, and hovering the cursor over it displays the crocodile emote (🐊). Finally, when waiting for a little while, the shadows of swaying tentacles (similar to the shape at the end of the first Freddy & Friends: On Tour! episode) will be shown on the main monitor for few brief seconds before fading away.

On September 21, 2021, the website was updated once again. Monty's popsicle was added to the desk, a bag of Meat Bites found next to the pizza box, and the corrupted "Stay away" text will appear when hovering the cursor around. Few minutes later, the second Freddy & Friends: On Tour! episode was shown. From the video, another hidden image appears at timestamp 0:43 for a split second, revealing what appears to be a withered version of Monty and a "REV531" text from the top left corner. As soon as the episode ends, the sun animatronic seen from the latest previous trailer shows up and soon switches as a moon animatronic, hinting that both characters may be the one same entity. The glitching six digit numbers appear, with number 1 appearing as the third number: "??1?2?"

On October 1, 2021, the website's office desk is now added with Pizzaplex coffee cups behind the phone, and the Monty popsicle appears to be melting. Double-clicking the screen-saver monitor now displays Glamrock Chica's and Roxanne Wolf's logo, and hovering the mouse cursor over displays a chick and wolf emote (🐥🐺). Hovering the cursor anywhere will also display another hidden glitched text - "be careful", and a non-glitched "I thought I heard something..." text when hovering over the phone. Occasionally, the movement of The Daycare Attendant can be heard.

On October 5, 2021, the website's office desk is updated with Mr. Cupcake and the hotdog at the left side, Glamrock Freddy's plush replaced with Roxanne Wolf's (although no longer honkable), and the security badge case is once again honkable. At the same time, the third Freddy & Friends: On Tour! episode premiered. Two more hidden images appear, revealing the withered versions of Roxanne Wolf (timestamp 0:12) with the text "Z2E" and Glamrock Chica (timestamp 0:34). At the end of the video, a new spider-like animatronic (later revealed to be a Music Man counterpart) with gloves is seen walking past the screen. Once again the glitching six digit numbers appear, with number 1 appearing as the first number: "1?1?2?"

On October 15, 2021, the website's office desk earned another update. The main monitor screen somehow begins to crack around the sides, the screen-saver monitor is now shattered and no longer does anything when clicked, some items (such as the hotdog and Mr. Cupcake) are scattered, and the melting Monty popsicle is smeared over the desk. The desk is added with a Foxy chocolate bar, a paper ball, and some empty cups.

On October 19, 2021, the fourth Freddy & Friends: On Tour! episode premiered. A hidden image of Vanessa's close-up briefly flashes at timestamp 0:18, containing captions found around the image: "Bleak Reactant", "Test and Fix", and "Pool". Also, glitching yellow and purple bit-blocks will randomly appear throughout the episode, and if putting the screenshots together like a puzzle, an image of Glitchtrap is revealed, confirming that Glitchtrap will indeed return in Security Breach. Finally, Vanny appeared as soon the episode ends, asking "Are you having fun yet?". The glitching six numbers now ends up as "1?1?21", drawing closer to the game's full release date.

On October 27, 2021, a final trailer was revealed during PlayStation State of Play livestream. The trailer reveals newly improved graphic designs in comparison to the first trailers, new gameplay features (such as climbing inside Glamrock Freddy for self-defense), and some clear glimpse of new enemies who were first introduced in the Freddy & Friends shorts' hidden scenes. At last, a full release date was revealed: December 16, 2021. Around the same time, Ray McCaffery, the executive producer of the game, posted a PlayStation blog post to explain the game's new gameplay details and how the game itself really works, while confirming the addition of unique office escape games, boss fights, more enemy types, and unlockable arcade minigames.[9]

On December 2, 2021, the game's Steam page is uploaded, and it also comes with some brand-new screenshots.

On December 16, 2021, the game was released.

On May 30, 2022, there was a DLC announced in a teaser, named "RUIN", which will be released at some point in 2023.

On May 19, 2023, a gameplay trailer for the RUIN DLC was posted on Steel Wool's YouTube channel, with a release date expected to be within the month of July.[10]

On July 14th, 2023, an official blog post on Steel Wool's website was released, announcing the DLC's official release date to be July 25th, 2023 at 12am PST.[11]

Five Night's at Freddy's Security Breach received mixed reviews. Praise was directed at its open world, gameplay mechanics, characters, and introduction of boss fights and cutscenes. Criticism was directed at its tone being too bright and upbeat compared to previous entries which were dark and gritty. Its messy gameplay was also criticized due to the many bugs and glitches that considerably ruined gameplay. The game was also criticized for being far too large and having many unnecessary aspects. Vanny's short amount of screen time in the game was widely criticized due to her being an important part of the games marketing from before its release.

The game's Steam page currently holds an 86% positive rating based on over 50,000 reviews.

The game won the PlayStation's 2021 Player Choice award on January 13, 2022.[12]

  • Due to leaks from Funko's list of upcoming merchandise products before the reveal of the game's official title, Five Nights at Freddy's: Pizza Plex was believed to be the game's actual name as evidenced by the "FNAF-PizzaPlex-" text. Scott Cawthon later disconfirmed it on his Reddit post.[13]
    • It was later revealed that "PizzaPlex" was part of the name of the main building in which the game takes place.
  • This is currently the biggest game in the franchise to date, far surpassing Help Wanted which previously held the title as the largest game in the series. The game's file size is almost 80 gigabytes rivaling and nearly surpassing enormous games like Grand Theft Auto V and God of War.
  • Most of the locations and structures in the Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex were actually based on places that the developers spent in their childhood.[14]
  • This is the second game in the series to be free roam, with the first being Help Wanted, as both games are from the Cooperative Era.
  • Although it is currently unknown what year this game takes place in the timeline, the month is shown to be March.[15]
  • When the game was released, there were many glitches that were taken advantage of by speedrunners, and because of these glitches, the world record speed run is just 3 minutes.
  • This is the first game in the franchise to not receive a Mobile port for iOS and Android.
  • The logo for Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach uses the font Orbitron Black by Matt McInerney.
  • It is the first game in the franchise where a Freddy variant is the deuteragonist.
  • It is the first game in the franchise where the human models (Vanessa and Gregory only) are fully modelled and visible.
  • The Steam page for Security Breach was first created on November 1, 2017, before the release of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator.[16]
